Terrific Don Carlos in Excellent Sound!

I'd forgotten what a good performance this is. Konya sings magnificently, living up to his reputation. One actually cares what happens to Carlos here. Jones was always a great Elisabetta. Her renditions of the big arias are noteworthy for their sense of line and proportion. The way she takes the high B in the final duet is masterful. And she emits a terrifying scream when Phillip denounces her in the third act (this is the four act version.)Cvejic is rather unexpectedly a very satisfying Eboli. Her "O don fatale" brings down the house. She always sings within her means, never forcing her voice to be larger than it is. Bruscantini is again an excellent Rodrigo (he's on the recording with Leyla Gencer too.) Why opera folks rag on Nicola Rossi-Lemeni, I don't know, but he is a great Filippo. The big aria is a highlight of the performance. Yes, he grandstands a bit, holding out the high notes for a long time, and clearly savoring the audience's reaction - why not?Zerbini is one of the best Inquisitors I've ever heard: terrifying in his pronouncements and bigotry, all sung with a rich, steady Italianate bass. The supporting cast is just as good. De Fabritiis leads an exciting performance, making fewer cuts than usual along the way. Posa and Elisabetta lose one verse of their first act arias, the second act trio is trimmed slightly, but the rest of the opera is left intact. The sound is excellent. Japanese speakers will enjoy the announcer's brief comments after Act Two.
