Don Carlo
This cast of Don Carlo is nothing short of spectacular. Placido Domingo sings with ease and beauty in the title role. Gwyneth Jones was a last minute replacement as Elisabetta (a short side note: She had been scheduled to record Elektra with Birgit Nilsson, Regina Resnik and Georg Solti but withdrew to go to Vienna to sing this performance.) Anyone who has ever found fault with her late performances needs to listen to her early singing Verdi in her prime to appreciate what a remarkable singer she was. Christa Ludwig delivers a fiery Eboli, remarkable for its dramatic bite as well as her vocal security. Nicolai Ghiaurov is no less wonderful as Filippo and receives one of the most effusive ovations I have ever heard after "Ella giammai m'amò." Hans Hotter is icing on the cake as the Grand Inquisitor.

Memorable Don Carlos
This is a real collector's item. On the one hand are famous performances by Domingo and Ghiaurov who are well represented on commercial recordings and equally good here, and on the other hand there are vivid performances by Christa Ludwig (Eboli) and Hans Hotter (Grand Inquisitor) who never recorded their roles. Add to this the fine Posa of Kostas Paskalis and at this early stage of her career a very well sung Elisabetta from Gwyneth Jones, and the result is an immensely thoughtful view of this brooding work . For me, Klobucar's sensitive conducting set the seal on this memorable performance .This being 1967, the sound is limited (but very acceptable) mono and the four-act version of the opera is used as was then the custom.

This performance is just as fine as Andy says it is; if you love the opera you must add this to your collection. The young Domingo is in sterling voice as is Gwyneth Jones as Elisabetta. If you've only heard her post 1970 or so you won't really understand why all the critics were raving about her. Ludwig is excellent in a role she didn't do often and when you have Paskalis and Ghiaurov in the same cast you know they'll crackle. The audience awards Ghiaurov's "Ella giammai" with a prolonged, richly deserved ovation. Hotter is terrifying as the Grand Inquisitor. Klobucar really works with the singers and doesn't attempt to draw attention to himself.
