Exciting Performance in Very Good Sound!
Joao Gibin is probably best known for replacing Corelli in EMI's studio recording of La Fanciulla del West with Birgit Nilsson (who replaced Callas). He has a ringing, attractive voice that characterizes Carlo well. Brouwenstijn is a glorious Elisabetta, making the long wait for her last act aria very worth it. Gorr is on fire as Eboli, impressing with her fluent Veil Song and then blowing us away with a showstopping "O don fatale". Bruscantini and Ghiaurov are both superb as is Louis Sgarro as the Friar. Bruno Marangoni makes a terrifying Inquisitor with a good low E. Molinari-Pradelli conducts ably, but makes quite a few cuts, including the end of the Prison scene. The sound is limited in dynamic range, but the voices are very clearly heard over the orchestra.
