Verdi: Don Carlo (In German) - Kozub, Watson, Dalis, Rudzak, Crass; Ludwig. Hamburg, 1968
$9.95
Description:
Ernst Kozub is a sensation in the title role, combining vocal ease with a dramatic color that bridges the best of Italianate and Germanic traditions. His performance is both thrilling and deeply expressive. Claire Watson is a superb partner, matching his vocal heft while exuding the ethereal grace that marked all of her portrayals. Irene Dalis may occasionally be taxed at the very top—understandable given that the role was written for a soprano—but she approaches the role with fearless intensity that more than compensates. Franz Crass, as Filippo II, contributes one of the most beautifully sung and nuanced interpretations of the role on record.
Note:
The final duet is missing from this performance. For the sake of continuity, we have substituted a version from Hamburg, 1968 featuring Ernst Kozub and Edith Lang.
