This performance presents a level of vocal accomplishment and ease with this repertoire that cannot be duplicated today. All of the singers are native Italians, all have this style in their blood. Other singers have been more subtle or refined, few have been as exciting.Stella sounds glorious. You never have to worry if she is going to get the next note or phrase. Corelli emits high notes with an incredible amount of squillo. The high As at the end of Act Three may be a moment of grandstanding, but oh, is it impressive. His vocalism would become more refined over the next decade; rarely has it been more thrilling. Barbieri is a terrific Amneris. This is the same year she managed to record the role in the studio twice for EMI and RCA (with Callas and Milanov respectively). Colzani is a ferocious Amonasro, Petri and Clabassi luxury casting as Ramfis and the King (Clabassi recorded his role for RCA too). Gui was an old pro at this music.The sound is listenable and pitched correctly. The mic placement doesn't always favor the singers, but the performance comes through anyway.Anyone who wants to find out what's missing from contemporary performances of this opera should hear this recording.
