Verdi: Aida - Arroyo, Dunn, Cassilly, Ohanesian, Ridderbusch, Ghazarian; Klobucar. Wien, 1974
$8.95
Description:
This is a decidedly Germanic Aida, but the Wagnerian approach proves surprisingly effective here. Fortunately, the singers also display a natural affinity for Verdi's style, resulting in a performance that feels both grand and stylistically authentic. Martina Arroyo is sublime in the title role—her opulent voice soars effortlessly over ensembles and scales back with great sensitivity for the more introspective passages. Her high C in "O patria mia" is nothing short of perfection. Richard Cassilly, who faced criticism after his Met debut in the same role, redeems himself with a commanding and radiant performance. Mignon Dunn brings fiery intensity to Amneris, David Ohanesian offers bold authority as Amonasro, and Karl Ridderbusch is pure luxury casting as Ramfis.
