This set is really for diehard fans of the individual singers. The sound is uneven and frequently compromised by the location of the tapist who, unfortunately, was seated too close to the timpani. The voices are clear, depending where they are on the stage. The audience (and their comments) makes the performance more enjoyable - unless you really want to concentrate on the music.Gencer still has her legendary charisma and an assured way with the music, but there's no denying that her voice has seen better days. The top is mostly reduced to shrillness and she indulges in her habit of scooping to higher notes almost constantly. Nave is an excellent Amneris with the type of Italian mezzo that used to be much more common than it is now. The audience loves her. They are also taken with Lamberti who not only sings well, but has very clear diction. Guelfi is a clear audience favorite; he is lustily cheered after his denunciation of Aida in Act Three. The two basses are more than competent. Franci holds things together as best he can; conducting outdoors is not easy.This isn't a recording for those just getting to know the opera, but if you're a Gencer fan you'll want this.
