Verdi: Aida - Gencer, Casellato-Lamberti, Nave, Guelfi; Franci. Macerata, 1973

$9.95

Description:

This performance of Aida will be of particular interest to fans of Leyla Gencer. Although captured a bit later in her career—when the voice had begun to show some occasional wooliness—Gencer’s performance remains remarkable for the stylistic finesse and control she brings, undoubtedly shaped by her deep experience in the bel canto repertoire. Her phrasing and interpretive nuance continue to command attention, even if the vocal edge has softened slightly.

The other standout in the cast is Luisa Bordin Nave, who delivers an exciting and vocally secure Amneris, injecting energy and dramatic tension into every scene. The recording was made during an outdoor performance, so some of the natural acoustic warmth is lost. The sound is otherwise okay, though the microphone placement seems to have favored the timpani, which can occasionally overshadow the rest of the orchestra.
