Aida
Giuseppe Verdi (1813–1901)
DESCRIPTION
San José has never been an international hub for opera, due in large part to its proximity to San Francisco, whose internationally renowned opera house has long dominated the region. On this occasion, however, the company produced an Aida that could stand alongside performances from many of the world's leading opera houses.
In the title role, Marisa Galvany sings with exquisite control and formidable power, even opting for the famous interpolated E-flat at the conclusion of the Triumphal Scene. Grace Bumbry is equally commanding as Amneris, displaying remarkable vocal power across an impressive range.
The real star of the evening is Robert McFerrin as Radamès. McFerrin made history as the first Black male leading artist at the Metropolitan Opera, where he broke important barriers for future generations of singers. He was also the father of Grammy Award-winning vocalist Bobby McFerrin. His rock-solid voice seems ideally suited to Verdi, combining beauty of tone with an impressive vocal core, bringing both authority and warmth to the role.
