At first I thought Andy had sent me the wrong disc: the first music you hear is not the famous Prelude, but what sounds like the Argentinian national anthem. The orchestra is soon joined by a choir. It's all over in less than four minutes and is tracked separately so if you want to just listen to the opera begin with track two. After that surprise, we are treated to a wonderful performance of Traviata. Moffo was still singing well in 1965 though her tendency to scoop is a harbinger of future vocal problems. Her Violetta is full of life, love, and is incredibly sexy to boot. The audience adores her and goes nuts after her "Ah, forse e lui", and then goes crazy again after a rollicking "Sempre libera", capped with an exciting top E-flat. One gets the sense that Moffo loves the audience as much as they love her and she gives a committed, heartbreaking performance of the doomed courtesan.Cossutta began and ended his career in Buenos Aires and the audience loves him too, applauding him warmly after his Act Two aria. Bacquier is awarded a similar ovation. In fact, all three principals are cheered to the rafters. The supporting cast is unusually solid. Martini leads a beautiful performance that should satisfy all Traviata lovers. Except for some slight distortion in loud passages, the sound is excellent (and in stereo too.)If you love Traviata or these singers, you owe it to yourself to hear
