- The role of the countess has always been an important vehicle for sopranos and mezzos in the twilight of their careers. One can usually expect star-power and waning vocal resources. By contrast, Marianne Radev's countess still contains a touch of the allure of her younger days when the character was known as the "Venus of Moscow". This adds an interesting romantic dynamic when she returns from the dead to tell Hermann what the "three cards" are.
