The Canadians should have felt very proud of their home-grown talent when this performance took place in Ottawa. As Hermann, Jon Vickers captures the character's obsessive nature that ultimately consumes him. His top is particularly ringing. Polish soprano, Teresa Kubiak is radiant as Lisa, singing with youthful lyricism combined with considerable dramatic reserves. Maureen Forrester's voice was still in excellent shape and maybe even too beautiful for the aging Countess. The sound is fair to good and the English comes through very well, especially from Vickers.
