This fine recording features some unlikely singers in the main roles. British baritone Benjamin Luxon sings Onegin. He manages to strike a very good balance between aristocratic bearing and raw youthful energy and frustrated ennui. Kiri Te Kanawa is youthful and bright as Tatiana while the dusky hues of her voice reveal an inner sensuality even in the opening act when Tatania is still a young girl. They are supported by a cast of excellent singers including Stuart Burrows as Lensky. Given the opportunity to sing a heavier part, Burrows displays vocal heft that was not apparent in his forays into Mozart rep. Gillian Knight, Gwynne Howell and Heather Begg round out the cast as Olga, Gremin and Larina receptively. The sound is fair.
