Tchaikovsky: Eugene Onegin (In English) - Luxon, Te Kanawa, Burrows, Knight, Howell, Begg; Kord. London, 1976

$8.95

Description:

This excellent recording features a cast of somewhat unexpected singers in the principal roles. British baritone Benjamin Luxon takes on Onegin, delivering a compelling portrayal that balances aristocratic poise with youthful energy and a touch of frustrated ennui. Kiri Te Kanawa shines as Tatiana, her voice youthful and bright, yet infused with dusky tones that hint at an inner sensuality, even in the first act when Tatiana is still a young girl.

They are joined by an outstanding supporting cast, including Stuart Burrows as Lensky. Given the opportunity to tackle a weightier role, Burrows reveals a vocal heft not typically associated with his work in Mozart. Gillian Knight, Gwynne Howell, and Heather Begg round out the ensemble beautifully as Olga, Gremin, and Larina, respectively.

The sound quality is fair.
