Oedipus Rex
George Shirley's lyrical yet imposing tenor proves a perfect fit for the role of Oedipus, capturing both the vulnerability and authority required by the part. Frances Bible brings a captivating blend of glamor and menace to Jocasta, her voice carving out the character's tragic arc with poise and intensity. The musical drama unfolds with gripping immediacy.
The chorus, which plays a central role in this work, unfortunately falls short. It sounds as though the ensemble lacks the numbers needed to deliver the kind of sonic impact Stravinsky's score demands.
