Montserrat Caballé offers a revelatory interpretation, reminding us that Strauss, at heart, had much in common with the bel canto tradition. Her refined control and expressive nuance, qualities she famously brought to roles like Norma, are on full display here. Teresa Zylis-Gara, perhaps the lesser-known among the trio, proves herself a worthy peer, delivering Strauss's music with rich tone and a Mozartian clarity that highlights the elegance and intimacy of the composer's writing.
