Vier letzte Lieder

Birgit Nilsson may not have been widely associated with concert repertoire, but her deep affinity for Strauss shines through in this performance. Though she chooses to transpose "Frühling," she nonetheless spins golden lines of sound, imbuing the text with a tender sense of optimism. Montserrat Caballé offers a revelatory interpretation, reminding us that Strauss, at heart, had much in common with the bel canto tradition. Her refined control and expressive nuance, qualities she famously brought to roles like Norma, are on full display here. Teresa Zylis-Gara, perhaps the lesser-known among the trio, proves herself a worthy peer, delivering Strauss's music with rich tone and a Mozartian clarity that highlights the elegance and intimacy of the composer's writing.

I agree with Mme Margaret H. that this is a great chance for comparison, but not only that. On my CD, I ordered the performances so each song was performed by the three legends in turn. It helped me discover not only the differences in their respective performancies, but also to look into the songs and, simply, get to know them better. In spite being a Swede, I found Birgit Nilsson a little bit too hard on the notes, and I favour Zylis-Gara all songs counted, and Caballé all songs and techniqual quality (together) counted. But all of them add something!I have compared with my previous CD with Nina Stemme, and this record is still worth having.

Three Divas, Four Songs

A great chance to compare three legends, each bringing something of “themselves” to the music, Nilsson those clarion, sunny high notes, Caballè’s chracteristic sweetness and legato. Perhaps Zylis-Gara is the best all around perrformnce while being the least spectacular.
