I have heard Felicia Weathers mostly in Italian roles so this was a treat to hear one of the major interpreters of Strauss' troubled teenager that had not been documented commercially. Weathers' singing is beautiful from top to bottom where she growls out (and even sustains) the low G-flats. She is a better behaved Salome than some others and was probably even more effective when seen. The rest of the cast are solid members of the Bavarian State Opera. Fritz Uhl sings and acts very effectively as Herodes, his diction crisp and clean, Benningsen is a formidable Herodias, and it's a treat to hear the young Brigitte Fassbaender as the page. Hans Gunther-Nocker is a strong Jokanaan. Keilberth knows how to conduct Salome very well.The sound is passable and indeed gets better after the first ten minutes or so. If you love Salome and want to hear Weathers in one of her most acclaimed roles, this is for you.

All around excellent. Felicia Weathers' voice was beautiful, unlike most Salomes ! She has the power to project over the large orchestra, and also, unlike most, she sounds as young as the character should be. A good supporting cast, and a passable sound recording.

I'm embarrassed to admit I hadn't known the wonderful soprano Felicia Weathers before this recording (thanks, Opera Depot!). She really sounds like a spinto soprano in the Italian tradition rather than a Germanic dramatic soprano. Although her voice is power and cuts through the orchestra, it is slender. When she ascends to the highest notes with a bright, not overly covered sound it is absolutely thrilling. Yet she is also able to conjure such tenderness in moments like "Jochanaan, Jochanaan, du warst schön."The rest of the cast is good but not remarkable. The sound quality is not mentioned in the description, and it definitely does not start out excellent or even very good. But after a few minutes it either improves, or my ears adjusted. The rest is good to very good sound.

Here is a very rare complete performance featuring Felicia Weathers. She made a few studio recital recordings that make one want to hear her in something more substantial. This Salome provides that opportunity. There is a great deal of exciting singing here but also some that is a little reckless and not 100% in tune. I enjoyed her none the less and based on what you hear here, I can understand why she generated a good deal of excitement at the time. Too bad it didn't last longer. The rest of the cast is very good. For me, Fassbaender is an added attraction.

I discovered opera-music live when I attended a classical concert in Paris “Salle Pleyel” during the autumn 1967.It was a serie of concerts called “Prestige de la Musique” organized by a famous radio producer Jean Fontaine. I heard Miss Weathers performs different arias and among them Puccini’s “Un bel di, vedremo” from “Madama Butterfly”. I had never been so deeply moved by a singing performance ! Each time I hear this aria I remember that precise evening and I’m forever thankful to Miss Weathers for opening my ears and heart to the wonderful world of opera where I spent so many fantastic hours eversince !!!

I saw Ms. Weathers as SALOME in Hannover/Germany in the sixties. From this time on I loved opera-music. Thanks Ms. Weathers !!!!
