Salome
Leonie Rysanek commands this star-studded performance of Salome, delivering a remarkable range of vocal color, dramatic nuance, and expressive shading. Her interpretation is both fearless and finely detailed, placing her unmistakably at the center of the performance.
The rest of the cast, though slightly eclipsed by Rysanek's intensity, is nonetheless impressive. Eberhard Wächter brings a dignified authority to Jochanaan, and Hans Beirer offers a sharply drawn Herod—tense, wiry, and menacing. Waldemar Kmentt contributes a memorable appearance as Narraboth.

When repertoire had that level
Klobucar often was homecooking after Böhms gala diners in the Wiener Staatsoper. Although the sound could be better, we can hear a fluent and expressive prchestra with a stromg cast. Rysanek, Waechter and Kmentt on the pesk of thier artistry (Kmentt a bit later declined, staying in lovable cameos for many years). Both mezzo brilliant and Beirer the ideal blend of Heldentenor and sloghtly scary comedian. The jews are led by Murray Dickie and Heinz Zednik. 1st nazarene was one of the most impressive parts Peter Wimberger, deceased at the age of 80 the day before i got my copy, gave for decades at the Staatsoper.

Blazing Performance in Listenable Sound!
This recording was obviously made by a Rysanek fan somewhere in the orchestra stalls. The voices are clearly heard over the orchestra, but they are recessed. Opera lovers used to live performance tapes will know what to expect.Rysanek is in top form throughout, soaring like a comet when Strauss asks her to. Even with the recessed sound, it's obvious her Salome is already slightly nuts at her first entrance. Her final scene is wonderfully depraved. Beirer and Hoffmann are excellent as the parents, Beirer in particular sounding in better voice than I've heard him in other performances. Wachter gives us a suitably hectoring Jokanaan. Kmentt and Lilowa are luxury casting as Narraboth and the Page who loves him. Klobucar leads a hot performance with a great orchestra and supporting cast.In addition to the recessed sound, there is some tape bleed-through in the Salome/Jokanaan scene. It's not too bad though and fortunately doesn't last. Fans of Rysanek will want this even if they have one or two of her other Salome performances (the one from Orange with Vickers as Herodes is in much better sound and is also available from Opera Depot).
