Salome

Richard Strauss (1864–1949)

DESCRIPTION

Inge Borkh brings her signature intensity and vocal heft to the title role in Strauss’s Salome. What distinguishes this performance is her remarkable ability to scale back her voice for passages of unexpected delicacy, a rarity in the dramatic Strauss repertoire. The result is a multihued interpretation of Salome, capturing both the character’s youth and innocence alongside her more savage desires.

Fritz Uhl presents a Herod of unusual youthfulness. While he does not push the dramatic extremes as some aging Heldentenors often do, the purity of his tone lends the character a surprising degree of credibility. Josef Metternich provides secure singing as Jochanaan, though his demeanor comes across as somewhat rigid.
