Der Rosenkavalier

Carlos Kleiber is joined by a stellar cast for this 1977 performance of Der Rosenkavalier. Brigitte Fassbaender brings sincerity and ease to the role of Octavian, paired beautifully with Lucia Popp, who matches her in youthful vitality. Helga Dernesch is poignant in her monologues, though she shows some strain in the higher tessitura—a year later, she would transition to mezzo-soprano roles.

Kleiber’s command of the score is phenomenal. The orchestra breathes with the singers, offering them space when needed and then enveloping them in lush sonorities., as is the performance.

Superb Performance!

Carlos Kleiber was idolized in Munich and the audience reactions here prove it. Even before the music begins for each act there are ovations. Kleiber lives up to his reputation, leading a performance distinguished for its "schwung" and beauty. The three leading ladies are all in top form. Dernesch struggles a bit when the Marschallin's tessitura gets a high, but she manages all notes with finesse. Her top B in the trio is firm enough. More importantly, she knows what she is singing about all the time. Hers isn't the most individual of portrayals, but she distinguishes herself all the same. Octavian's tessitura lies high for Fassbaender too; there is little she doesn't know about this character though. She is also genuinely funny as "Mariandl" in the third act. Popp sings the "Wie himmlische" phrase and many others like an angel. She is exquisite throughout the performance.Moll is a force of nature as Ochs. I have heard more individual performances of this part, but none so well sung. From a ringing top to an organ-like bottom, Moll is supreme. He was unique: there is/was no other like him.The supporting cast is made up of Kleiber Rosenkavalier regulars, all great (though some sound ready for retirement). The sound is terrific. If you love Rosenkavalier, you need this in your collection!
