An first-rate Elektra

There is a more well-known version of this recording from Vienna with almost the same cast. This performance, however was from a tour to Montreal. Nilsson, Rysanek and Resnik prove to be the definitive (dysfunctional) family, each bringing a unique approach to these three very different roles.

Montreat Elektra

I taped this performance on 9/18/67 from the Montreal Expo/Vienna State Opera visit. I was sitting center orchestra, center row and my seat companion was none other than Tony Randall, an avid opera fan. Live, it was, in my opinion, Birgit's best Elektra; she was possessed that night. So was Leonie; near the opera's end, with Elektra dead and the orchestra thundering out the Agamemnon motif, Leonie entered stage right at 100-yard-dash speed, sang out her "Elektra" at mid stage and exited stage right..all in a matter of seconds. It brought the audience to its feet. I never saw her do that again, but the memory of that September night in Montreal will be with me forever. I am so happy you are able to share this event with your subscribers!

Fine Performance in Recessed Sound

The singers here are every bit as good as their reputations would lead you to believe. Nilsson, Rysanek, and Resnik were all tremendous interpreters of these roles and they certainly show why here. The supporting cast and Bohm's conducting are also superb. What's the problem? Well, the source is an in-house tape (with the occasional loud cough) so the singers all sound a bit recessed. The ear adjusts and this may well capture more accurately what these voices sounded like in the house without the close microphoning heard in broadcasts.I'd still recommend this if you love the opera or these singers. They cover themselves in Straussian glory and the performance is an exciting one!
