Strauss: Elektra - Mastilovic, Rysanek, Hoffman, Hopferweiser, Wimberger; Hollreiser. Wien, 1977
$9.95
Description:
It's remarkable to consider that in 1970s Vienna, performances of this quality were not uncommon. This account of Elektra features a cast that brings both dramatic intensity and vocal distinction to the stage.
Grace Hoffman stands out as Klytämnestra, her clear, focused mezzo lending the character an unexpected sympathy that blurs the line between protagonist and antagonist in the spirit of ancient Greek drama. Leonie Rysanek, in her fifties at the time, brings her familiar intensity to Chrysothemis. While there is a trace of strain in her upper register compared to earlier years, her darker tone adds a compelling dimension to the role. Danica Mastilovic shows signs of vocal wear, but delivers the title role with admirable dramatic commitment. Lotte Rysanek also makes a brief but notable appearance as the fifth maid.
