Die schweigsame Frau
Edita Gruberova was uniquely suited to sing Richard Strauss's coloratura roles, effortlessly managing the vocal gymnastics and soaring over the orchestra when Strauss unleashes its full power. In this performance, she lights up the stage whenever she appears, whether delivering shimmering high notes or unleashing the character's wrath at Morosus. Marius Rintzler adds a touch of dignity to the otherwise doddering Morosus, and Romano Emili's strong lyric tenor is a good match for Gruberova as her lover, Henry.

It's unfortunate that this delightful Strauss opera is not more well known. It might not have the drama of Salome or Elektra or the lush, sweeping romanticism of Der Rosenkavalier, but it certainly has its own share of Straussian melody as well as one of his signature coloratura roles. Edita Gruberova is in fine shape here and pulls off the role of Aminta with ease. The sound is particularly excellent in this live recording from 1976, with near studio quality. There are few major label recordings of this particular opera, and I have no reservations about recommending this set.
