Strauss: Die Frau ohne Schatten - Rysanek, Schröder-Feinen, King, Berry, Hesse; Böhm. Salzburg, 1975
$12.95
Description:
This performance reunites much of the original cast from the Metropolitan Opera’s inaugural season in its new home, capturing a sense of continuity and occasion. Leonie Rysanek, though now more selective with the highest reaches of her soprano, still commands the role of the Kaiserin with unmistakable flair. Her distinctive timbre and fearless phrasing remind us why she became one of the great Straussians of her time.
James King seems to revel in the upper reaches of the Emperor’s music, his tenor radiant and unstrained. Ursula Schröder-Feinen, while beginning to show signs of vocal fatigue, manages a committed and often moving portrayal of the Färberin. Walter Berry brings refinement and gravitas to Barak, his baritone smooth and authoritative throughout. The sound quality is excellent, offering a fitting showcase for these veteran performers.
