This is a wonderful version of this difficult opera. Each singer is the best in his/her role, and they are all in better vocal shape than the famous recording in '77, especially King. Bohm is always at his best in Strauss operas. This might be the best version available, especially because of Operadepot's excellent remastering. There is some distortion at a few of the climaxes, but for the most part it is very clear to listen to, and the voices sound great.

If there is any question about why Leonie Rysanek was so revered, this recording answers that question in spades. Rysanek is a almost a force of Nature: blazing top notes, passionate, but never hysterical, a glorious Empress - Strauss would've been proud.The rest of the cast is legendary by now. Most of these singers sang their roles together at the Met and elsewhere, vindicating Böhm's advocacy. Yes, he makes cuts, especially in the last act and some Straussians won't like that. I find they help tighten things up (the opera is very long). Cuts or not, Böhm and company give us the Real Deal. I think these were the last performances of the Dyer's Wife that Ludwig sang. She (like Rysanek) knew when it was time to retire a role. By 1974 the top notes were getting more out of reach (she ducks a few here) and it was time to move on. Don't misunderstand: she is still marvelous. Berry continues to be the soul of humanity as Barak and King triumphs again as the Emperor.The sound is excellent broadcast stereo. All fans of Frau should have a recording with these principals. This is one of the best!
