Die Frau ohne Schatten
This performance of Die Frau ohne Schatten came from the same run that was recorded and later commercially released with one notable exception. James King fell ill on this particular evening and was replaced by Matti Kastu. Kastu brings a leaner, more lyrical tone than King, but still manages the role with aplomb (although, unlike King, he ducks the high note at the end of "Falke, du wiedergefundener").
Leonie Rysanek's voice may have been more ethereal ten years prior to this performance, but she more than makes up for that with greater vocal abandon. It is a real shame she never attempted the Dyer's Wife.
The Dyer's Wife was the perfect role for Birgit Nilsson in the later part of her career. It gave her ample opportunity to unleash her gargantuan voice without making too many vocal demands with regards to tessitura.
Walter Berry's Barak is nothing short of definitive.

Terrific Performance in Very Good Sound!
This performance from January 1977 predates the performances recorded by DG from October of the same year. The casts were almost identical though some of the smaller roles changed hands (Patricia Wise sings here, Sally Arneson in the autumn run just as an example). Everyone is in excellent shape. If anything, one gets a better sense of what these performances sounded like in the house since DG's release was a synthesis of several performances.Rysanek and Nilsson justify their reputations in these roles. Their final top C is perhaps more orgasmic in the DG performance, but the engineers probably took the best from the run. Kastu replaces King and is very good. He ducks the second B-flat in his Act Two monologue; I don't know why as the first one came out well. He is steady of voice without the noisy vibrato of most contemporary tenors in this music (except Clay Hillary). Hesse gets off a great B-flat at the end of Act Two (she just passed away a few months ago). Some noisy audience members are shushed at the beginning of the opera, but other than that the sound is good and correctly pitched.If you love Frau, get this, even if you have the official DG release.

A Memoerable Frau, but January 77, not October
This performance is not from the run of performances in October 1977 that were used in the DGG CD issue, all of which featured James King, as per the Staatsoper online archive, which also shows that the only Frau performances sung by Mattu Kastu were 16, 20 and 27 January 1977. Nevertheless it is a fabulous performance, very likely 27 January, the unforgettable perfomance I attended.
