Strauss: Der Rosenkavalier - McDonall, Barstow, Masterson, Smith, Walker, Sydney; Mackerras. London, 1975
Listen to a Sample:
This recording of Der Rosenkavalier, captured in pristine sound, features a cast of singers who manage to sing Strauss’s unique brand of melody exquisitely without sacrificing the excellent English translation used in this performance. Josephine Barstow is an ardent Octavian and makes a good argument for casting a soprano in this part. Valerie Masterson brings youthful purity and vocal bloom to Sophie’s music. Lois McDonall may lack in aristocratic magnetism, but she captures the Marschallin’s understated wistfulness poignantly. As alluded to the sound is excellent.
