Josephine Barstow is an ardent Octavian and makes a good argument for casting a soprano in this part. Valerie Masterson brings youthful purity and vocal bloom to Sophie’s music. Lois McDonall may lack in aristocratic magnetism, but she captures the Marschallin’s understated wistfulness poignantly.
