Strauss' bucolic opera Daphne isn't performed often unless there's a Strauss Festival or a star soprano who wants to sing it (i.e. Renee Fleming). This recording may represent the first time the opera was performed in Argentina. Erich Kleiber fielded a terrific cast. Rose Bampton sings beautifully throughout, her warm middle register (where most of the role lies) richly conveying Daphne's fear of growing up and her latent sexuality. When the top notes are required Bampton delivers. Her diction is hazy though; I had a difficult time discerning which words she was actually singing.Svanholm and Dermota are first-rate as her quarreling would-be lovers (their diction is excellent by the way) as is Weber in the short role of Daphne's father Peneois. Lydia Kindermann's Schumann-Heink-like contralto is perfect as Daphne's mother Gaea; she reaches the extreme low notes of the part with ease. The supporting cast also has some fine voices in Angelo Mattiello, Mafalda Rinaldi, and Norma Palmieri. Kleiber leads an exciting performance with several cuts (Daphne is a fairly short opera, but some passages drag on). The sound is very good for the period; there were no glitches that I heard.As a filler, Opera Depot gives us Elisabeth Grümmer's glowing account of the Vier Letzte Lieder from 1970. The sound is even better there.All Strauss lovers should indulge in this!
