I'm on a Daphne kick right now so I'm listening to as many performances of it as I have in my collection. This one is wonderful. The singers are not only well-cast, but know what they're supposed to do and do it extremely well. Bjoner's voice could be uneven, but here she jumps to heights of heavenly Strauss sopranos. Her tone is perfectly steady throughout, her high notes glisten, and she is completely believable as the anxious, ultimately triumphant heroine - certainly one of the best roles I've heard her sing.Wehofschitz is a dreamy Leukippos. Traxel is effective although the unrelenting high tessitura almost defeats him. Ernster is very good in his small, but important role as is Ekström as Gaea with some of the lowest notes ever written for the female voice. The supporting cast includes a young Hugh Beresford who later switched to heldentenor roles and sang Tannhäuser at Bayreuth. Ingrid Paller and Elisabeth Schwarzenberg sing the important roles of Daphne's two companions. Quennet leads an uncut, magical performance. The sound, some odd,infrequent pops aside, is excellent. An essential recording for Strauss fans and, especially, Bjoner fans.
