Carol Neblett, still in her twenties at the time of this performance, delivers an Ariadne that invites comparison with some of the most distinguished interpreters of Strauss. Her pristine voice rises effortlessly above the orchestra and proves especially striking in the upper stratosphere of her range.

She is well partnered with the Bacchus of John Alexander, whose lyric tenor brings together qualities associated with both Strauss and Mozart singing—firm line, brightness of tone, and ease in the upper register. As Zerbinetta, Patricia Wise contributes a lively and engaging portrayal, marked by spunky charm. The remaining roles are capably filled by Dominic Cossa, Don Yule, and a young Samuel Ramey.
