This performance marks one of the very few performances that Christa Ludwig assumes the part of Ariadne. Perhaps she was afraid of the tessitura. If that is the case it seems odd that she didn't do it more as she sings her arias with exquisite beauty. She is surrounded by greatness. Sena Jurinac sings the part of the composer with artistry and beauty of tone while the Zerbinetta of Reri Grist enflames his senses with her wiles. Jess Thomas was still in fresh voice and sings the stratospheric tessitura of Bacchus with gusto. The sound is excellent.
