This performance offers a rare treat – the opportunity to hear Christa Ludwig take on the role of Ariadne. A role she seldom sang, perhaps due to the challenges of its tessitura, but in this performance, she delivers with a vocal warmth and beauty that could easily make one wonder why she didn't embrace it more often. She is surrounded by a stellar cast. Sena Jurinac as the Composer fills the role with youthful vitality. An ARIADNE to bring you sheer joy
Sheer pleasure from beginning to end. Christa Ludwig resplendent throughout (in her one and only performance, all in the cast superb, Reri Grist a total delight, Jess Thomas still splendidly heroic. Sena Jurinac owns the Composer. The great Karl Bohm - THE conductor for Ariadne!

Ariadne gets her man!
This is a very fine performance that showcases the single time Christa Ludwig sang the title role. She, and all the other cast members are wonderful. At the conclusion of the opera, on disc 2, there is a performance of Bruennhilde's Immolation, presumably also with Ludwig--the liner does not say. It is also great.

Simply A Must Have 10 STAR performance
This is a dream performance. Exquisite singing from all cast members and the recorded sound is fantastic for a live performance. One gets a very true capture of the voices, Ludwig is a thrilling Ariadne , Thomas sings liek a superstar, Jurinac a perfect composer, Reri Grist singing better than I have ever heard her before. DO NOT HESITATE. No opera library is complete without this performance. Ludwig singing the Immolation Scene from Gotterdammerung is thrown in as a fantastic bonus.

Christa Ludwig as Ariadne
As You mentioned already: Christa Ludwig ceased to sing Ariadne after one performance and was replaced by Hildegard Hillebrecht. So this is a very rare recording and I am glad to have it. In 1964 I attended the Salzburg Festival, having no billet for Ariadne but a very nice women gave me (free of charge) their place. Probably because she wanted to see Mrs.Ludwig but the cast hade already changed. Anyway the representation was great (with Dr.Karl Böhm, Reri Gris:t and all others) and this recording is it also.

Ludwig's only assumption of "Ariadne"
After this Salzburg production, Ludwig returned to the role of the Composer. Every phrase of her Ariadne is drawn from a noble and sumptuous palette. Ludwig and Thomas share a heroic glow in the duet, enchanting each other and their audience. Grist is dazzling, her precision and grace placing her first among Zerbinettas. Jurinac’s Composer soars, her uniquely sensuous timbre (happily) betraying her true femininity. Schoeffler’s “maestro” is a luxury. Feldhoff’s wonderfully sung Harlekin pops, and he leads a characterful troupe. Popp, Otto, Hellmann are a ravishing trio. Bohm deftly captures the backstage bustle, the nimble Commedia, and the splendor of the Opera. Sound excellent.

Reri Grist was very kind to me as a sudent at the London Opera Centre around 1977 when she gave a master class there,Iwas being taunted by an obnoxious fellow student about my weight and Miss Grist was very kind and supportive,of more interest was the story she toldof the recording of GIOVANNI inwhich she sang Zerlina,it was done in a cold church in Prague and he rattled through the recits in a poor mood and chose her to bear the brunt of his critisiscm and she told of how she was in fact weeping through the recording of one of her arias,this was the DGG recording with Fischer Diskeau.She also spoke of how Zerbinetta was probably her best and most lucrativ role although she also had affection for Gilda
