Description:

Buenos Aires may seem an unlikely setting for a work as quintessentially Viennese as Arabella, but this performance proves that Strauss’s charm and nuance can thrive far beyond Austria. Thanks in large part to an outstanding cast, the production bubbles with elegance, warmth, and finely tuned characterizations.

Heather Harper strikes an ideal balance in the title role, portraying Arabella’s innate reserve without veering into aloofness. Her voice conveys glamour with a refreshingly human touch, allowing the audience to connect with the character’s emotional arc. Norman Mittelmann brings depth to Mandryka, blending country-boy earnestness with a quiet confidence that grounds his portrayal. Olivera Miljaković is a vivacious and restless Zdenko/Zdenka, capturing the role’s youthful volatility with vocal agility.

Gisela Litz adds a surprising sultriness to Adelaide—reminding us that Strauss’s matriarchs need not be matronly—and Hans Sotin delivers a refined, resonant Waldner, his bass in superb form. The sound is excellent.
