Arabella
About ten minutes on each disc of this recording of Arabella is heavily affected by distortion. This is a shame, because otherwise the sound is excellent, and the performance is very fine indeed. Claire Watson's purity of tone makes for an unusually sympathetic portrayal of Strauss' Princess-in-her-own-mind protagonist, and Eberhard Wächter brings not only a gorgeous voice but a deep soul to her country-bumpkin suitor. Oliviera Miljakovic is a sweet-sounding Zdenka who isn't afraid to be strident when called upon, and Adolf Dallapozza sings so well he nearly makes Matteo likable. Mimi Coertse turns in a sparkling, pinpoint-accurate Fiakermilli and Berislav Klobucar leads the way with a firm hand.

Great Performance, Good Sound!
There have already been a number of reviews already posted here about the beauty of this performance so I won't spend my alloted space rehashing opinions with which I agree. This IS a memorable performance with excellent performances from everyone. The sound is another issue. While it is mostly very good, there are some frustrations here and there. David M. below mentions tape delubrication which occurs in Act 1 in the scene between Mandryka and Waldner. It occurs again just before Arabella's "Das wahr sehr gut, Mandryka"; fortunately, it doesn't affect the final eight minutes. Disc 2 (on my copy anyway) is blighted by those irritating pauses between tracks that occasionally plague Opera Depot releases (Disc 1 is fine). All of this is worth enduring for the performance. It's not that bad but perspective buyers should know what they're getting.

Sister act
Claire Watson is an aptly maidenly Arabella, although the timbral twinship with Olivera Milakovic's Zdenka will have listeners wondering who's singing when. No such confusion when Eberhard Waechter's profoundly sensitive Mandryka holds the boards, seconded superbly by Adolf Dallapozza's juicy-sounding Matteo and Oskar Czerwenka's throughly adorable Count Waldner. The latter's spouse, Christel Goltz, is well past her prime but Mimi Coertse's high-flying Fiakermilli offers compensation, as does a scene-stealing cameo by veteran character artist Elisabeth Hoengen, getting the opera off to a raffish start. Berislav Klobucar keeps things moving, a good idea in what is second-tier Strauss, for the most part. The sound is only OK and marred by tape delubrication in places, hence the one-star deduction.
