Rossini: Il Barbiere di Siviglia - Panerai, Monti, Pastori, Cortis, Calabrese; Giulini. Rai Televisione, 1954

This bubbling performance features a wonderful ensemble including Rolando Panerai, Antonietta Pastori and the elegant tenor, Nicola Monti. But in my opinion the true star of this recording is Carlo Maria Giulini in the pit. Barbiere is an opera that many "serious" conductors seem to dismiss, but this recording demonstrates the benefit to having a great maestro at the helm. He seems to know how to extract humor out of the most banal of musical figures as well as supporting the singers with extreme sensitivity to the vocal demands of the piece. The sound is good.
