This performance of Guglielmo Tell clearly asserts that despite emerging front the classical world, Giaochino Rossini was capable of creating drama of the same intensity of some of his later compatriots. And even in the face of the daunting demands of Rossini's writing, this spectacular cast acquits their roles with the same intensity that they might bring to La Forza del destino. Giuseppe Taddei's noble yet avuncular baritone is ideally cast in the title role. Franco Bonisolli tackles the dizzying tessitura of Arnoldo with astounding security and ease. Teresa Zylis-Gara brings luscious tone to the role of Matilda. The sound is excellent.
