Arabella
This remarkably well-preserved recording offers a rare opportunity to hear Viorica Ursuleac, the original Arabella, in a role she created at the opera's 1933 premiere. Conducting is Clemens Krauss, who not only led that premiere but also shaped much of the performance tradition surrounding the work. Their presence imbues this document with extraordinary historical significance, providing insight into the opera's earliest interpretive style.
Trude Eipperle is a standout as Zdenka, bringing a full-voiced warmth and expressive clarity to the role.

Phenomenal Arabella
It’s difficult to say what you will love more in this unique live recording: the wonderful cast, the ideal conducting of Clemens Krauss or the perfection of the orchestra. You will remain with an unique regret: to not have been there….

Viorica Ursuleac created the role of Arabella some 10 years previous to this recording. She was Strauss' favourite soprano and renowned for floating top notes and a big and fruity voice. She was obviously a fine vocal actress and her Arabella here is attractively expressive and forthright, not only singing beautifully but giving a full picture of a free sprit. Occasionally she sounds a little matronly but her under recorded voice is always secure and dramatically interesting. Her Mandryka, Hans Reinmar is appropriately bluff and resonant. Perhaps a little more vocal refinement might have made him a memorable Mandryka. Trude Eipperle is a young sounding and sweet voiced Zdenka.As one expects from Saltzburg the sound is remarkably good, particularly for it's age. A version of this beautiful opera to treasure.
