Richard Cassilly
Richard Cassilly had a long and varied career, ultimately leaving a significant mark in the Wagnerian repertoire. Unfortunately, he reached the height of his prominence later in life, when Wagner’s demands were beginning to take a toll on his voice. This compilation aims to showcase just how exquisitely refined a singer he was, particularly in his younger years. You may be surprised to hear how adept he was in bel canto as well.
This compilation features arias and excerpts from Beatrice di Tenda, Anna Bolena, Otello, Tosca, Tannhäuser, Walküre, Tristan, Elektra, Jenufa, Il Prigioniero, Troilus, as well as extended scenes from Peter Grimes.
Also featured are performances by Marie Collier, Ludmila Dvořáková, Brenda Roberts, Heather Harper, Marilyn Horne, Eva Randová, Giulietta Simionato, and Norman Treigle.

A wonderful tribute to a great artist
Richard Cassilly had an eclectic career spanning Verdi, Wagner, Britten, Stravinsky and many other composers. A unique voice and a terrific actor. His performances were visually thrilling and this comes through in his vocal interpretations. I heard him live singing Siegmund at age 68 and the voice was still strong and exciting.

Interesting collection of a great tenor
I had the pleasure to be blown away by Richard Cassilly's performances in NYC in the 1980s (including Tristan, Drum Major in Wozzeck, Vere in Billy Budd, and Tannhauser). By then his voice had quite the wobble, but his intense commitment to the music was obvious, so I was happy to see this retrospective of roles I'd never heard him in. Sound ranges from somewhat distant and fuzzy to mostly fine, and it's easy to hear his artistry in these recordings. Very glad to have this collection, and would LOVE to hear that entire Tristan.

A Reflection on Cassilly
Opera Depot has performed a great service for the opera-going public by publishing a Compact Disc entitled, "Richard Cassilly: A Retrospective," which has "live" excerpts of the Heldentenor (who died in 1998) performing in "Beatrice di Tenda" (with Marilyn Horne, conducted by Nicola Rescigno), "Anna Bolena" (with Giulietta Simionato), "Otello" (led by Sir Georg Solti), "Tosca," "Tannhäuser," "Die Walküre," "Tristan und Isolde," "Elektra," "Jenůfa" (conducted by Rafael Kubelík), "Il prigioniero" (with the great Norman Treigle, and led by Leopold Stokowski), "Troilus and Cressida," and "Peter Grimes" (with Heather Harper, and David Atherton conducting), from 1957 to 1977.One can trace the rather sweet-sound tenor of his youth to his position of a leading dramatic tenor, with the vocal maturation in conquering many of the most difficult roles in the repertoire. His singing was not of the purest sort; he was, by inclination, a great singing-actor, with some of the usual flaws of that breed. At full roar (his was one of the largest voices I ever heard in the theatre), the timbre could turn harsh, with a somewhat gritty quality. But, for Cassilly, all was turned to expression.This writer had the privilege of seeing him at the Metropolitan Opera, in 1984, in three operas. These were extraordinary experiences. The present anthology brings back glorious memories of one of the last century's greatest tenors.
