Dido and Aeneas

In the aftermath of the early music revolution of the 80s, I think it is time to revisit baroque operas with singers with the stature of Jon Vickers and Tatiana Troyanos. Troyanos as Dido is larger than life in both her queenly bearing as well as her immense grief at the end. She is well matched by Jon Vickers as Aeneas. Although the role does not have the same kind of challenges as the roles that made Vickers famous, he nonetheless lends his trademark intensity and conviction. Graziella Sciutti is luxury as Belinda.

Dido Sounds Great With Modern Instruments!

What a relief to hear a performance of this opera that uses modern instruments! Both Troyanos and Vickers are in great shape. Troyanos uses her distinctive mezzo with great passion and is memorable in her final aria. Vickers' craggy tenor may seem out of place in this musuc, but I find him noble and honest in a role one wishes were a bit bigger. Sciutti is a lovely Belinda and Joan Caplan a powerful Sorceress who doesn't try to sound like a witch. The chorus and orchestra are both very capable under Rescigno's leadership. The sound is very good, probably recorded by an audience member who sat fairly close to the stage as the voices are clearly heard.Recommended to fans of the singers and to those who are tired of hearing this music played on toy instruments!

Troyanos est fantastique. Vickers ne fait qu'une bouchée d'Enée, bien plus facile et plus court que celui des Toyens...

In our days a baroque opera must (?) be performed with ancient instruments and conducted by a specialist. Though Nicola Rescigno leds here a traditional ensemble it is a great performance. They feel the soul of this music which is according to my opinion the most important. I bought this CD because it is a Vickers rarity. But not only a rarity: Vickers is simple the best Aeneas I have ever heard. Troyanos is a heartbreaking Dido. After Dame Janet Baker and Dame Joan Hammond she is the third on my list. Both Graziella Sciutti and Joan Caplan are excellent in their roles.
