Dido and Aeneas

With her commanding stage presence, Martha Mödl is an inspired choice for Dido. It is especially fortunate that this recording captures her when her voice was still in prime condition, allowing her to deliver a performance that remains convincing within the Baroque style. A young Hermann Prey brings a refined, classically shaped interpretation to Aeneas, though his approach to the role’s emotional core leans toward the Romantic.

Excellent Performance in Excellent Sound!

Over the last couple of years I've often recommended performances I considered Sleepers in Opera Depot's catalogue - let's add this one to the list. Most collectors will assume a German language recording of Purcell's best known opera will be at most a curiosity, but Schmidt-Isserstedt knew what he was doing and leads a well-paced performance. His edition is similar to others that were available at the time (1955). While it may not please purists, it tells the story well and gives the soloists a chance to show their stuff.Mödl was still in excellent shape vocally and Dido sits in the best part of her voice. Prey is a manly Aeneas, singing very beautifully. Lindgreen is a lovely Belinda. Hammer may be remembered as the hair-raising Klytemnestra in the 1944 Elektra (also available from Opera Depot); she is a vivid Sorceress too, intimidating without descending into caricature. Her attendants have a great time with their "cackle" music as does the chorus. The sound is excellent.Mödl fans should get this as well as those who love the opera. It's refreshingly different.
