Puccini: Turandot (excerpts) - Shuard, Smith, Collier; Downes. London, 1965.
$5.95
Description:
Despite its flaws, this recording is worth it for the Turandot of Amy Shuard alone. Hearing Shuard sing “In questa reggia” might even prompt the question, “Birgit who?” Not to suggest one singer is superior to the other, but Shuard brings a more voluptuous sound, with high notes that seem to erupt from her, making the icy princess both glamorous and truly terrifying. Many tenors might shy away from such a formidable presence, but Donald Smith’s stentorian tone holds its own. He also delivers one of the most lyrical “Nessun dorma”s I have ever heard. I only wish the full performance existed, as we get just a tantalizing single line from Marie Collier’s Liù.
