This is a great example of an Arena di Verona performance: the two leads are remarkable, the audience is an active participant, and the sound is just adequate. Corelli was only a few months away from retirement, yet he stills sound virile in this, probably his most popular role. The voice isn't as easily produced as it was a decade earlier, but he still has all the notes (including the top Cs in the Riddle scene) and plenty of masculine sex appeal. Janku was a Czech soprano with a Nilsson-like top and a steady, appealing timbre. She is also imaginative in her interpretation, believably melting into passionate woman. What a pity she didn't have more of an international career and that she died young (54). She would be a major star today! The Liu of Anna Novelli is good without being memorable; some clod boos her after "Perche un di" in the first act and is immediately shushed by the rest of the audience. Gianfranco Casarini is a terrific Timur and the three ministers are wonderful: funny and characterful (too bad we're not told who they are). Patane manages to keep everyone together and follow Corelli's idiosyncrasies expertly.This is not a Turandot for the first-time listener; those who love the atmosphere of an outdoor Italian audience will be forgiving of the occasional ragged ensemble and enjoy it for the thrills it still possesses. There are some odd pauses between tracks and occasional editing errors too.
