This is an Arena di Verona Turandot, recorded by someone probably in the mid-stalls. It's an enjoyable performance, but potential purchasers should know what they're getting. The singers are all excellent. Volume levels fade up and down, probably to reduce applause. The audience is very much the other leading character. After Domingo finishes "Turandot! Turandot! Turandot!" in the first act the audience erupts into cheers and bravos, quite drowning out the Persian Prince's solitary "Turandot!" just before he is executed. In the third act, Domingo's "Nessun dorma" ignites a firestorm of applause with one female fan clearly shouting "Bravo, Placido!" several times. One overhears conversations and enthusiastic approval throughout the performance. Domingo was in terrific form this night. He makes the joint top C with Turandot, but leaves Janku holding the note by herself. Janku is as good here as elsewhere; the outdoors arena may account for some suspect intonation here and there. Maliponte is a lovely Liu and Gullino deserves the warm hand he receives as he grieves for Liu's death. The three ministers are good as is the unsung Bruno Grella who gets the performance off to a great start with his authoritative Mandarin. Patane keeps his forces together most of the time.If you want a great-sounding, musically accurate performance of Turandot, look elsewhere. If you've often wanted to go to the Arena di Verona vicariously, here's your chance!
