Turandot
Captured in extremely good sound, this is a thunderously well-sung Turandot. The smaller roles are cast perfectly, from Virgilio Carbonari's voice-of-doom Mandarin to that rarest of things, an entertaining Ping-Pang-Pong trio. Galina Vishnevskaya is a piteous, limpid Liù whose dying aria luxuriates in her legendary top. Little need be said about the Turandot and the Calàf. Franco Corelli and Birgit Nilsson's pairing in this opera was generally one for the ages, and so it is here. The only disappointment is Gianandrea Gavazzeni, who seems to think the opera only has two speeds: zero and sixty. But whenever someone opens their mouths, the performance is a treat.

Puccini esoteric masterpiece.
An amazing exhibit of the Puccini’s swan song, his final esoteric masterpiece believed by many to be his greatest work. How did the verismo master turn to something this exotic? This move may have indicated a creative exploration of a new style. Departure from verismo into an enigmatic exotic realm.The sound quality is quite good conveying the otherworldly vibe of the ambience. Crystalline clarity Nielsen voice is soaring above the orchestra. Franco’s superhuman sound exceeds all human expectations.It is hard to believe he used no amplification. My compatriot Galina Vishnevsjaya is a humble touching Liu. Being Franco aficionado and collector I am not disappointed: In this spectacle power of Franco’s genius is perfectly on par with Puccini’s.

Thrilling Turandot in Excellent Sound!
This is a Turandot for the ages: no one today sings the opera like this. Nilsson's blazing top and imperious characterization, Corelli's blazing top and passionate interpretation - no wonder the princess melts! The end of "In questa reggia" finds both singers attempting to outsustain the other (Corelli wins by a hair). Nilsson's top C's at the end of the riddle scene triumphantly surmount the chorus and then Corelli's incredible C at "No, no. principessa altera"is one for the record books. His "Nessun dorma" wins a howl of approval from the crowd. I wish Nilsson had sung "Dal primo pianto", but that was not to be (except in the studio).Vishnevskaya's debut (and, I think, only performance) at La Scala wins terrific "Bravas!"from the crowd and she deserves them. Her Liu is more passionate than most - there is a lot at stake for this lady both in the story and personally. A friend told me she had little if no rehearsal with Gavazzeni and a momentary misalignment with the orchestra at 'Perche un di" bears that out, but the singer and conductor find each other quickly and the moment turns into a triumph. The three ministers are terrific (Capecchi, Ricciardi, and De Palma) and so are the Mandarin and the Emperor. Gavazzeni directs an exciting performance, one that cannot be matched today.The sound is excellent mono radio broadcast. If you don't own this in one form or another, you are not a Puccini/Turandot fan!
