Historic ! Del Monaco at his best.

I'm rating this set with four stars because the performance is so exciting, but honesty compels me to say this isn't for those who can barely tolerate older sounding recordings. Andy has tried to stabilize the pitch as much as possible. Even with all his efforts this set is not for the casual listener or for anyone just getting to know the opera.The singing is redolent of the lusty, gutsy verismo-dripping performances we've all heard about, but rarely hear today. Caniglia is a splendid Tosca, the voice biting, even and secure from stinging high Cs down to growling low notes. Listen to the wonderfully melodramatic way she intones "E avanti a lui" at the end of the second act; it is absolutely believable in a way that most modern singers avoid, singing Puccini's written notes, but afraid of the melodrama. Del Monaco is in his prime here; the top notes have squillo for days and are exciting - no wonder the audience goes nuts. He doesn't shout either, his "E lucevan le stelle" is sensitively sung and the audience demands and gets an encore (Caniglia encores "Vissi d'arte" too). Guelfi is a terrifying Scarpia who gets applause mid-aria for one or another of his phrases. The unidentified supporting cast is superb too; everyone knows how this opera is supposed to go and Rapalo leads everything to the manner born. The disk break is appropriately after Act One. Again, the performance is thrilling, but you've been warned about the sound!

Questa Tosca napoletana è stata un occasione per poter ascoltare una recita live di Mario Del Monaco, che mi risulta fino ad oggi inesistente in quest'opera.Il suono di questa esecuzione è decisamente penoso, al limite dell' inascoltabile con evidenti distorsioni soprattutto nel 2° atto.La Caniglia non era evidentemente in buona serata e il bis di "Vissi d'arte" è un vero regalo che il pubblico napoletano ha voluto concedersi, Del Monaco è nel pieno della sua vocalità ed è un Cavaradossi energico e vigoroso fino all'estremo, grandi fiati e grandi note acute, manca ovviamente di phatos amoroso, Guelfi è un magnifico Scarpia e su questo non c'erano sono dubbi.Non giudicabile la direzione di Ugo Rapalo a causa della scarsissima qualità dell'audio originale.Trattasi nel complesso di un edizione assolutamente nella media per quei anni, ma nel complesso con questi nomi ci si poteva aspettare qualcosa in più.
