Everyone was having a good night when this Tosca was performed in Vienna on Valentine's Day 1973. Rysanek's voice sounds much more of a piece than it could at this time, the top blazing and free, the middle less muddy. She is very much the diva in the best sense and is very believable in the melodrama of Acts Two and Three. Her reaction to Cavaradossi's death is blood-curdling: you really feel you are at the opera!Atlantov sings very well, especially in his last act aria. He matches Rysanek decibel for decibel in their soaring phrase to the high B. The professional screamer who assisted other Cavaradossis at the Vienna State Opera at this time is on hand here and he earns his money. Mastromei is an elegantly evil Scarpia who gives it right back to Rysanek in Act Two. The supporting cast is very fine with singers like Reid Bunger, Manfred Jungwirth and Mario Guggia in key roles. Giovaninetti leads a powerful, theatrical performance. The sound is mostly very listenable though there a few places where the volume drops precipitously for a minute or two in Acts One and Two (was the tapist afraid of being discovered?). One can still hear the performance, but I wish this had been smoothed out before being released. Recommended to Tosca lovers and fans of the singers!
