Exciting Tosca in Excellent Sound!

This is the soundtrack to a video available from VAI. I haven't seen the DVD, but this performance is exciting enough without actually seeing the production. Kabaivanska is in top shape as Tosca, singing with great passion and ease in front of an audience that adored her. The top C's are thrilling, the big scenes performed in the grand manner so many of us love. Labo gives us ringing top notes and a sense that this is how it's all supposed to go. Mastromei was a popular, if underrecorded, Italian baritone here in top condition. The supporting roles are all well-sung and acted, especially the Sacristan of Guido Mazzini and Spoletta of Fernando Jacopucci. De Fabrtiis conducts a fluid performance that could have used another rehearsal: there are a number of flubbed lines and missed entrances. The stereo sound is very good. Tosca lovers need this!
