It is difficult to recall a performance featuring Eleanor Steber that is anything less than extraordinary, and this Tosca only reinforces that impression. Steber's vocal control is nothing short of astonishing, her dramatic intensity burns with searing conviction, and her delicate moments shimmer with remarkable finesse. Opposite her, a young Richard Cassilly brings a rare sweetness of tone to Cavaradossi, lending the character a tender vulnerability. Walter Cassel, though lacking the sheer vocal weight often associated with Scarpia, compensates with sumptuous phrasing and a richness of expression that leaves a lasting impression. Adding a charming touch to the evening, a young Marilyn Zschau, still a student at Juilliard, makes a brief but endearing appearance as the shepherd.
