One wouldn't expect Tomowa-Sintow to be a fine Tosca, but she is. Her top C's (all five) are brilliant, the rest of her expressive voice a real pleasure to hear. Furthermore her portrayal is dramatically captivating. Her discovery of Mario's death at the end brings the performance to a hair-raising, satisfying conclusion. Domingo is in good voice though he has a few hoarse moments here and there. Roar is an excellent, formidable Scarpia. The supporting cast is very good, each part well-characterized. Lopez-Cobos conducts an exciting performance. He also restores a brief passage to the duet between Tosca and Cavaradossi in the first act. It's good to hear, but it's also obvious why Puccini cut it out. Tosca's famous Act Two curtain line "E avanti a lui" is moved to a later spot in the music after the death of Scarpia (at the director's request?)The sound is excellent and on pitch. My only complaint would be a sloppy (and unnecessary) disc break: both the second and third acts could have fit on the second disc with no problem.Tosca lovers should get this!
