After hearing Virginia Zeani in the title role of Suor Angelica, it becomes difficult to imagine another soprano inhabiting the role with such complete conviction. She brings together lush lyricism, stoic suffering, and ecstatic religious fervor to create a portrayal that is deeply moving without ever tipping into sentimentality. Her Angelica is emotionally searing and spiritually transcendent, making this a performance of rare impact.

The supporting cast is solid throughout, but there is no question that this is Zeani's show from start to finish.
