After hearing Virginia Zeani in the title role of Suor Angelica it is hard for me to imagine any other soprano in that part. The combination of the lush lyricism, stoic suffering and ecstatic religious fervor Zeani brings to the role results in a devastatingly moving Angelica without ever veering towards maudlin pathos. The rest of the cast is solid but it is without doubt Zeani’s show. The sound is fair.
