Suor Angelica
After hearing Virginia Zeani in the title role of Suor Angelica, it becomes difficult to imagine another soprano inhabiting the role with such complete conviction. She brings together lush lyricism, stoic suffering, and ecstatic religious fervor to create a portrayal that is deeply moving without ever tipping into sentimentality. Her Angelica is emotionally searing and spiritually transcendent, making this a performance of rare impact.
The supporting cast is solid throughout, but there is no question that this is Zeani's show from start to finish.

Suor Angelica - Virginia Zeani
Zeani is fabulous as Suor Angelica. I highly recommend this most moving opera and singer.

Zeani is Heart-rending!
Zeani fans should have this Suor Angelic in their collections as should any fan of this opera. Zeani has the right tears-in-the-voice quality so appropriate for this role. She sings beautifully, soaring to and enjoying the three high C's in the role. Her final scene will break your heart. The other singers, including Anna Maria Rota as the implacable Aunt, are also excellent, but (as Andy and Jeffrey say) it's Zeani's show. The sound is a little muddy, but certainly listenable.Andy's filler is Zeani in arias from Rondine, Boheme, and Manon Lescaut, all of which she sings to the manner born. I hope Andy releases Zeani in Tosca and Madama Butterfly soon!
