Elisabeth Höngen offers a stoic but restrained portrayal of the Principessa, endowing the character with a measure of sympathy—as a woman shaped by her time rather than a figure of cruelty. There is even a faint suggestion of inner anguish in her infliction of pain upon someone she still holds dear.
