Suor Angelica
Sena Jurinac brings a youthful yet full-bodied tone to the role of Suor Angelica, delivering a performance that resonates in both its sweeping climaxes and more intimate passages. Elisabeth Höngen offers a stoic but restrained portrayal of the Principessa, endowing the character with a measure of sympathy—as a woman shaped by her time rather than a figure of cruelty. There is even a faint suggestion of inner anguish in her infliction of pain upon someone she still holds dear.

Beautiful Performance of a Beautiful Opera!
This sounds like it is from the soundtrack of a German television production as there is no audience noise or applause at the end. The sound is clear, if a trifle muffled; the pitch of the tape is correct. The performance is sung in a good German translation. In Lanfranco Rasponi's famous book of diva interviews "The Last Prima Donnas", he writes that Jurinac had a limited top, but that is disproved by her singing here. She sings Angelica's three high Cs with no problem; in fact, they are spot on. More importantly, she is a lovely Angelica, fully embracing the young nun's desperate love for her child while breaking our hearts with her heartfelt sobs when she's told of her child's death. Her accounts of "Senza mamma" and the finale are very satisfying. Höngen makes the most of her brief role. While implacable and judgemental, she is not heartless. The unidentified supporting singers are all excellent. Quadri leads with a compassionate, but not indulgent baton; he also makes no cuts. There is an earlier performance of this opera with Jurinac and Rössl-Majdan from 1951 that was once available on Myto. It too is lovely though if forced to choose I'd pick this one. Jurinac is more mature vocally and believable here. At any rate, if you love this opera as I do you'll enjoy this performance a lot.
