This is one of my favorite recordings of Manon Lescaut.Young, fresh Domingo and the incredible Virginia Zeani (who is, by the way, 20 years older than Domingo!) are both in top form and make an incredible team. If only we could find more recordings of the great Zeani on this website, the sales would most certainly go up!

This is a white hot performance that is somewhat marred by being off-pitch. It is running a whole half step high which tends to give Zeani’s magnificent voice a bit of a nasal edge and makes Domingo sound more like a lyric than spinto tenor. If you have the means to correct the pitch problem, this is possibly one of the most intense and worthwhile recordings of Manon Lescaut you could have, in the same league as the performances by the indomitable Magda Olivero who makes all competition (yes, sorry, even Tebaldi and Callas)pale in comparison.

This is a beautiful opera sung by the most talented and accomplished artists of the age.
