Maralin Niska’s legacy may have dimmed somewhat since her retirement, but during her career she was a regular presence on the American regional circuit, admired for her dramatic commitment, stylistic range, and secure technique. As Cio-Cio San in Madama Butterfly, she proves an especially natural fit, with both the vocal means and the temperament the role demands. The performance moves easily between finely spun pianissimi and moments of full, almost overwhelming intensity, without any sense of effort on Niska's part.

She is joined by a young José Carreras, whose Pinkerton combines easy bravado with hints of warmth that prevent the characterization from becoming one-dimensional. Heard here before his move into heavier roles, the voice is free and open, carrying effortlessly in climactic moments. The close of the Love Duet, crowned with a high C, makes a particularly strong impression.
